Computer Troubleshooting 101: A Guide for Non-Tech Savvy Users

Computers have become an integral part of our daily lives, simplifying tasks, and keeping us connected.  However, when technical issues arise, the frustration can be overwhelming, especially for non-tech savvy users. Read on below for a simple and easy-to-follow guide for resolving common computer problems.

​1. Start with a Restart: It might sound cliché, but restarting your computer can work wonders.  Many software-related issues can be resolved simply by rebooting the system. So, if something isn't working as expected, start with a restart!
2. Check Power and Connections: Ensure that your computer is properly plugged into a power source and that all cables are securely connected. Sometimes, loose connections can lead to strange issues.

3. Run a Full System Scan: Install a reliable antivirus program and perform regular full system scans. This will help detect and remove any malware or viruses that might be causing issues. Pro Tip: Microsoft has a built-in Malware Software program, run this command from the search field: “MRT”, Open, Yes, Next, Quick Scan.

4. Troubleshoot Your Internet Connection: If you're experiencing internet-related issues, check your router, modem, and Wi-Fi settings. Restart your router, ensure your Wi-Fi password is correct, and check for any network outages in your area.

5. Check Hardware Connections: If you're encountering hardware-related issues, such as a malfunctioning printer or external device, ensure all connections are secure. Replace any faulty cables if necessary.

6. Google the Error Message: When encountering specific error messages or issues, simply copy the error message and paste it into your favorite search engine. You'll often find helpful solutions or discussions on tech forums.

Remember, mastering basic computer troubleshooting doesn't normally require advanced technical skills. By starting with the basics outlined above, non-tech savvy users can tackle common computer issues and maintain a smooth computing experience.

Final tip: If the problem persists after you have tried some or all of the tips above, be sure to write down the date, time, the error message and/or the program you were using at the time the problem occurred and contact an IT professional.
